Women Who Feel in Control Are Healthier

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Women who see themselves as among the ``best off‘‘ in American society appear to be healthier, both mentally and physically, than those who see themselves as less well off, a report suggests.

This appears to be true regardless of whether or not the women actually have more education, higher income or better jobs compared with their peers.

``It is not simply the effects of income or education that are linked to better health, but also the perception that one is higher on the social hierarchy,‘‘ according to Dr. Nancy Adler of the University of California, San Francisco, lead author of the report published in the November issue of Health Psychology.

Adler and colleagues studied 157 healthy white women aged 30 to 46, who all had at least a high school education.

To see how the women rated themselves, the researchers had them mark on a picture of a ladder where they fell between those who were ``the best off‘‘ and those who were ``the worst off‘‘ in terms of money, education and jobs.

Regardless of how well off the women were in relation to their peers, those women who ranked themselves higher on the ladder tended to have less abdominal fat, lower heart rates and a healthier physical response to stress. Such factors have been linked to risk of cardiovascular disease and other ailments.

In addition, women‘s perceptions of their socioeconomic status were related to their psychological health: those who rated themselves higher tended to have less chronic stress and negative feelings, more sense of control over their lives, and healthy coping techniques.

All of these factors ``may predispose individuals to better health trajectories,‘‘ according to the authors. They add that ‘‘there is reason to believe that subjective social status is affecting both the mental and physical outcomes‘‘ of these women.

Although experts have long been aware that many health factors are related to socioeconomic status, this is the first research that finds such strong relationships between people‘s perceptions of their status, regardless of actual status.
