Expression and prognostic significance of EGF receptor and proliferating cell nuclear antigen in colorectal cancer

Abstract
AIMS To study the progrostic significance of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen(PCNA) expression.
METHODS Immunohistochemical staining was performed on paraffin-embedded sections of 61 colorectal carcinomas.
RESULTS EGFR positive rate was higher (77.0%) in colorectal carcinomas than in normal mucosa(0%). PCNA lable index(LI) (46.6±26.6%) was higher in colorectal carcinoma than in normal mucosa (15.1±5.4%, P <0.05). EGFR expression was related to Duke's stage (P <0.05), and PCNA expression was related to differentiation and Duke's stage (P <0.05). The survival rate decreased with the increasing positive rate of the expression of EGFR and PCNA the four-year survival rate was significantly lower in >65% group than in ≤25% group (P <0.05). There was an inverse correlation between either EGFR-LI or PCNA-LI and survival rate. ......
