Relation between preoperative chemotherapy and expression of p27 and Ki67 in tissues of esophageal carcinoma

    ¡¾Abstract¡¿ AIM: To study the relation between preoperative chemotherapy and expression of p27 and Ki67 in tissues of esophageal carcinoma. METHODS: A total of 48 patients with esophageal carcinoma were assigned to 2 groups: a control group (n=24) that received esophagectomy without chemotherapy and a preoperative chemotheª²rapy group that received preoperative chemotherapy before esophagectomy (n=24). All the patients were followed up for 40 months. Immunohistochemical staining was used to determine the expression of p27 and Ki67 in the 48 cases. RESULTS: We found that the expression of p27 in esophageal tumor was associated with the histology grade of tumor (¦Ö2=4.021, P=0.045), but not with carcinoma invasion degree (¦Ö2=0.062, P=0.961), lymph node metastasis (¦Ö2=0.006, P=0.936) and neoª²adjuvant chemotherapy (¦Ö2=0.035, P=0.551). The expression of Ki67 was associated with the invasion degree (¦Ö2=4.48, P=0.034) and lymph node metastasis (¦Ö2=4.002, P=0.045) and neoª²adjuvant chemotherapy (¦Ö2=5.371, P=0.02), but not with differentiation (¦Ö2=0.488, P=0.4851). The median survival time was prolonged to 17 months in those who received neoª²adjuvant chemotherapy, but compared with the 14 months for those not receiving neoª²adjuvant chemotherapy there was no statistical significance (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: The expression of p27 and Ki67 can be used as important markers in assessing the prognosis and preoperative chemotherapy effect in patients with esophageal carcinoma. ......
