Effects of total glucosides of paeony on active Heymann nephritis in rats

    ¡¾Abstract¡¿ AIM: To study the effects of total glucosides of paeony (TGP) on active Heymann nephritis (AHN) in rats. METHODS: The rat models of AHN were induced by intraª²peritoneal administration of kidney homogenate and Freund¬ðs adjuvant. AHN rats were divided into 3 groups: AHN model group, TGP group and dexamethasone group. The control group was only given normal saline solution. Serum urea nitrogen, creatinine, total protein and 24ª²hour urinary protein were observed. RESULTS: In TGP group, the serum urea nitrogen, creatinine and 24ª²hour urinary protein significantly decreased (P<0.01 or P<0.05) while the serum total protein significantly increased, compared with those in model group. But no significant difference in renal cell histological pathology was observed between TGPª² or dexamethasoneª²treatment group and model group. CONCLUSION: TGP is effective in the treatment of hypernitrogenemia, proteinuria and hypoproteinemia in AHN rats. ......
