     A controlled study of personality characteristics and trend of personality disorders in neuroses

    【Abstract】 AIM: To explore the personality traits of neuroses and to determine the difference of dimension, trait level, model of personality and the trend of personality disorders between neuroses and normal subjects. METHODS: Neuroses patients (n=137) and normal subjects (n=132) were assessed with Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEOPIR) and Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire (PDQ+4). RESULTS: The mean score of extroversion in the fivefactor personality model of NEOPIR in neuroses was significantly lower than that of normal group (96.52±22.25 vs 105.59±18.16, P=0.006) and the mean score of neuroticism in the fivefactor personality model of NEOPIR in neuroses was significantly higher than that of normal group (102.97±23.59 vs 91.87±18.23, P=0.001). There was significant difference between neuroses and normal subjects in thirty traits of the personality model. The scores of anxiety (N1), angry hostility (N2), depression (N3), vulnerability (N6) and fantasy (O1) in neuroses were significantly higher than those in normal subjects. The scores of activity (E4), positive emotions (E6), actions (O4), selfdiscipline (C5), trust (A1) and values (O6) in neuroses were significantly lower than those in normal group(P<0.05 or P<0.01). The scores of schizotypal(4.36±2.19 vs 3.34±2.02), schizoid (3.05±1.54 vs 2.54±1.59), paranoid (3.15±1.61 vs 2.51±1.53 ), borderline (3.84±2.04 vs 2.60±1.77), depressive (3.85±2.02 vs 2.28±1.73), compulsive (5.79±1.95 vs 4.86±2.25), dependent (3.72±1.92 vs 3.02±1.80), avoidant (4.91±1.92 vs 3.61±2.12) personality disorders and the total score of PDQ+4 in neuroses were significantly higher than those of normal group(P<0.05 or P<0.01). CONCLUSION: There are differences in dimension, trait level, model of personality and personality disorders between neuroses and normal subjects. ......
