     Therapeutic effects of curcumin on memory function damage and cerebral ultrastructure in mice after infrasound exposure

    【Abstract】 AIM: To explore the influence on memory function and cerebral ultrastructure of mice exposed to infrasound and to study the therapautic effects of various doses of curcumin.METHODS: BALB/c mice with equal learning capacity by Morris maze were exposed to 8 Hz,130 dB infrasound for 14 days,2 hours each time each day and various doses of curcumin were given after each exposure.The learning capacity and cerebral ultrastructure of mice in each group were observed and compared.RESULTS: The memory function of mice in infrasound alone group decreased.The neurons showed anoxic character.The mitochondria swelled,malformed or had vacuoles and the liposcin increased.Increase of heterochromation was observed in some neurons or accumulated along the karyotheca.Compared with that of mice in infrasound alone group,the memory function of mice in curcumintreated infrasound group improved.The neurons showed little or no anoxic character.The structure and formation of most mitochondria were near normal and the malformed ones were fewer in number.The liposcin was hardly seen and the increase of heterochromation was not obvious.CONCLUSION: 8 Hz,130 dB infrasound may induce lipid peroxidation,damage the cerebral ultrastructure and decrease the memory function of mice.Curcumin can alleviate these damages,which may be associated with its effects of antiperoxidation and mitochondria protection. ......
