    Latin:

    Polyporus Umbellatus

    Origin:

    The sclerotium of Polyporus Umbellatus, a fungus of the Polyporaceae family. The fungus is parasitic on the rotted or withered roots of birch, maple, oak, etc. In China, it is mainly produced in Shaanxi, Hebei, Yunnan, etc.

    The herb is harvested in spring and summer. Procedure: Remove sand and earth from the fungus, dry it in the sun, slice and include in a preparation for use when raw.

    Properties:

    Sweet and bland in flavor, mild in nature, it is related to the kidney and urinary bladder channels.

    Induces diuresis and removes dampness.

    Applications:

    1. To treat dysuria (difficult or painful discharge of urine), edema, diarrhea, strangury (slow and painful spasmodic discharge of urine drop by drop) with turbid urine, etc.:

    a) Edema and dysuria due to deficiency of the spleen:

    This herb is often used together with tuckahoe (Poria Cocos), oriental water plantain rhizome (Rhizoma Alismatis), largehead atractylodes rhizome (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), etc., e.g., Si Ling San.

    b) Diarrhea due to retention of fluid:

    This herb is used in combination with Chinese atractylodes rhizome (Rhizoma Atractylodis), official magnolia bark, tuckahoe (Poria Cocos), etc., e.g., Wei Ling Tang.

    c) Dysuria due to deficiency of yin but existence of heat, strangury with turbid urine, etc.:

    This herb can also be used in combination with oriental water plantain rhizome (Rhizoma Alismatis), talcum, donkey-hide gelatin, etc., e.g., Zhuling Tang.

    Dosage and Administration:

    5-10 g.

    Decoct this herb for oral administration.

    Cautions on Use:

    This herb should be avoided by anyone without retention of fluid.
