    Origin:

    The dried bile of brown bear (Ursus arctos) or black bear ((Ursus thibetanus).

    Brown bear gall is mainly produced in the northeast and north of China and is also found in such provinces as Shaanxi, Sichuan, Yunnan, Qinghai, Xinjiang and Gansu. Black bear gall is primarily produced in the northeast and north of China.

    It is better to hunt the bear in summer or autumn. Take the gall bladder out, dry it, remove all its epithelium and grind the gall finely for use.

    Note: Prior to 1989, killing bears for their galls and other parts was legal in China, but today all hunting and trade in bear parts are forbidden.

    Properties:

    Bitter in flavor, cold in nature, it is related to the liver, gall-bladder and heart channels.

    Functions:

    Clears away heat to remove toxic substances, relieves convulsions and spasms, removes intense heat from the liver and improves the eyesight.

    Applications:

    Dosage and Administration:

    1-2.5 g.

    Bear gall mainly contains ursodesoxycholic acid (UDCA) and secondarily contains chenodesoxycholic acid, deoxycholic acid, cholic acid, cholesterol, bilirubin, inorganic salts, etc.

    A cholate salt can normalize the functioning of the gall-bladder, promote the secretion of bile, markedly increase such secretions and relax the common bile duct and sphincter muscle.
