    Fructus Perillae

    Origin:

    The ripe fruit of Perilla frutescens (L.) Britton., or Perilla ocimoides (L.), an annual/perennial plant of the family Labiatae. Native to east Asia, it is grown in hills and mountains in China, Japan, Singapore, India, etc.

    Perilla grows to about 0.6 m by 0.3 m. It is in flower from July to August. The scented flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs). The plant cannot grow in the shade. It requires moist soil.

    In China, perilla is mainly produced in the provinces Jiangsu, Anhui, Henan, etc. Harvested when the fruit ripens in autumn, the fruit is dried in the sun for use when raw or after parched for a while and it is pounded finely for use.

    Properties:

    Pungent in flavor, warm in nature, it is related to the lung and large intestine channels.

    Applications:

    1. Treats coughs and dyspnea:

    This herb is good at sending down adversely rising qi and resolving phlegm and coughs and dyspnea will be relieved when adversely rising qi is sent down and phlegm is resolved.

    a) Coughs and dyspnea due to accumulation of phlegm and reversed flow of qi:

    This herb is often used in combination with white mustard seed and Chinese radish seed, i.e., Sanzi Yangqi Tang.

    b) Prolonged coughs and phlegm-dyspnea due to upper excess and lower deficiency:

    This herb is used in combination with the herbs which warm the kidneys, resolve phlegm and keep adverse qi flowing downward, such as cassia bark, Chinese angelica, official magnolia bark (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis), etc., e.g., Suzi Jiangqi Tang.

    2. Treats constipation due to dryness in the intestines:

    Containing oil and grease, this herb can not only remove dampness by moistening and lubricating the intestines, but also send down and purge the lung-qi so as to assist the large intestine in constipation..

    This herb is often used in combination with apricot kernels, hemp seed, Mongolian snakegourd seed (Semen Trichosanthis), etc., e.g., Zisu Maren Zhu.

    Dosage and Administration:

    5-10 g.

    Decoct this herb for oral administration.

    This herb should not be used by anyone suffering from dyspnea and coughs due to yin deficiency or anyone with loose stools due to deficiency of the spleen.

    Modern Researches:

    This herb contains fatty oil (mainly containing linoleic acid and linolenic acid), vitamins, amino acids.

    The leaves are used in the treatment of colds, chest stuffiness, vomiting, abdominal pain, etc.

    The seed is used internally in the treatment of asthma, colds and chills, nausea, abdominal pain, food poisoning and allergic reactions (especially from seafood), bronchitis and constipation.

    The stems are a traditional Chinese remedy for morning sickness.
