    【Abstract】 AIM: To explore the expression characteristics of alphafetoprotein (AFP) in different subpopulations of MHCC97 cell lines of human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: Side population (SP) cells and nonSP cells were telled using FACS analysis according to the ability of these cells to extrude the Hoechst 33342 dye. Immunocytochemical staining was performed to show the expression of AFP in SP and nonSP cells. RESULTS: With the Hoechst 33342 extrusion assay, SP cells were found to account for 1.8% of the MHCC97 cells， and AFP was much more expressed in SP cells than in nonSP cells.
