Inappropriate use of physical restraint may be harming patients with learning difficulties, a new report says.

The report, published last week by the National Patient Safety Agency, highlights five key safety issues affecting patients with learning disabilities.

It says that the key areas of risk for people with learning difficulties are the use of inappropriate control and restraint, vulnerability to complications, difficulties in swallowing, a lack of appropriate information, and misdiagnosis.

The agency reached its conclusions by gathering the experiences of people with learning disabilities and their carers across England and Wales, obtaining feedback from healthcare and social care professionals, and looking at existing research.
