This image of health workers fumigating the streets of Calcutta, India, against the malaria mosquito is one of about 90 photographs in an exhibition campaigning on climate change. The exhibition, NorthSouthEastWest, claims that cases of malaria are expected to rise in India as increasing temperatures speed up parasite development in the mosquito.

The exhibition, which opened in London this week, has been organised by the charity the Climate Group—formed recently to promote reduction in greenhouse gas emissions—and the British Council. The images of international climate hotspots by 10 photographers from the agency Magnum focus on the effects that global warming is believed to be having on the physical environment, wildlife, human rights, and the world's food supply, as well as on human health. The exhibition also looks at how technology and leadership on climate change might be able to make a difference.

Steve Howard of the Climate Group said, "Climate change is real. So are the solutions, which are practical, affordable, and in many cases profitable. This exhibition shows us that a low carbon economy is the only sustainable future for our planet."

NorthSouthEastWest is at the Science Museum, Exhibition Road, London SW7 until 15 May 2005. The exhibition will also tour 100 cities in 60 countries More details are at www.northsoutheastwest.org(Trevor Jackson)
