【Abstract】 AIM: To investigate the optimal time for bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) transplantation after myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS: MI was induced by occluding the left anterior descending artery (LAD) in SD rats. MSCs were isolated from the rats, purified, proliferated and they (1 mL) were transfused through caudal vein into transplantation groups (n=10/group) at 1 d, 1, 2, and 4 weeks after MI; the same culture medium (1 mL) was transfused into the control group (n=10). Four weeks later, the heart function and myocardial ischemic size and infarct size were evaluated. RESULTS: The heart function and myocardial ischemic size and infarct size of 1day group after MI had no difference from those of the control group (P>0.05) . The improvement of heart function in 1, 2, and 4week groups were more distinct than that of 1day group (P<0.05); myocardial ischemic size and infarct size were also smaller than those of 1day group (P<0.05). Among the transplantation groups, the treatment effect of 2weeks group was the best. CONCLUSION: Subacute stage (1-2 weeks after MI) might be the optimal time for MSCs transplantation. ......
