     Therapeutic effect of tetramethylpyrazine for experimental acute pancreatitis in rats

    【Abstract】 AIM: To study the effect of tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) on inflammatory mediators during acute pancreatitis (AP) in rats. METHODS: A total of 96 SD male rats weighing 280-320 g were randomized into 3 groups: control group (n=24), AP group (n=36) and TMP group (n=36). The models of AP in the latter 2 groups were established by the injection of 35 g/L sodium taurocholate ip into the rats. The animals in the 3 groups were killed 3, 6, 12 and 24 h after operation to test the serum levels of plateletactivating factor (PAF), TNFα and IL6 in different phases. RESULTS: The serum levels of PAF, TNFα and IL6 of AP group significantly increased (P<0.01), and the serum level of TNFα got to a peak at 6 h and the serum IL6 reached the highest level at 12 h after operation (P<0.01 vs control group). After TMP was used in AP rats, the serum levels of PAF, TNFα and IL6 were significantly decreased (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: TMP can inhibit inflammatory mediators and relieve the damages of the pancreas or lung in AP rats. ......
