Qin Juren once suffered from rhinorrhea with turbid discharge. It smells terrible and is disgusting. Even his wife and children disliked him. Although he had visited many doctors and had taken a lot of drugs, it didn't work. He was hopelessness and prepared for death.
One of his friend stop him and said, "Why not try it again? The doctors here can't treat you, but it doesn't mean that the doctors in other places can't treat you either."
Thinking that it was reasonable, Qin Juren left his family together with one of the domestic servants.
He had been many places but couldn't find any one who was able to treat him. Finally, he arrived at the remote south area where the Yi nationality resided. A local doctor told him that it was easy to treat the disease. Then the doctor picked a kind of bud and made him take it.
After taking the bud for half a month, the disease was cured and the nose running stopped. Qin Juren was very delightful and said, "Can you give more of the bud? It's no need to take such a long distance to get the bud if the disease recurs." The doctor said, "Why not take the weeds with you?"
in Juren was even more grateful to the doctor and rewarded him with a great gift. When he was back, he planted it in his garden. Since then, he treated the patients who was suffered from nose disease with the herb.
"What's the name of the herb?" the public asked.
But Qin Juren had forgotten to ask the doctor of Yi nationality. Thinking that it was in the year of Xin-Hai (Chinese lunar year, Xin--8th heavenly stem, Hai-12th earthly branch), so he called it Xin-Yi (i.e., magnolia flower).
The magnolia flower has the actions of dispersing wind-cold and clearing nasal passage, and is indicated for exogenous affection with wind cold, and headache and nasal congestion. It is the key herb in treating rhinorrhea with turbid discharge and headach.
1、秦举人得了一种怪病，鼻孔流脓流涕，腥臭难闻。这种病很讨人嫌，连他的妻子儿女也躲得远远的。秦举人请过许多医生，但吃什么药也没有用。他想：这么活着招人嫌恶还不如死了好，就打算寻死。
2、有个朋友知道后劝道：“天下这么大，本地医生治不好，何不到外边求医去？还能顺便逛逛名山大川，散散心。”
3、秦举人一听有理，反正呆在家里也净跟老婆孩子呕气，就带了个家人，骑着马出门了。
4、秦举人走了很多地方，但没遇见一个能治鼻子的医生。后来，他走到南方的一个夷族人居住的地区，有个夷家医生说：
“这病好治。”
秦举人喜出望外，急忙请他医治。
医生到山上采了一种花苞回来，让秦举人服用。
5、秦举人吃了半个月，鼻子真的不流脓了。他十分高兴，对医生说：
“这种药真灵，你能不能让我带一些回去，万一再犯病时就不用跑这么远求医了。”
医生想了想说：“不如给你带些种子回去栽种。”
6、秦举人更加高兴，他重重酬谢了医生，带着种子回家了。到家后，他就种植这种草药。几年过后，院子里长了一大片。凡有人得了鼻病，他就用这种草药给人医治。
7、人们问：“这药草叫什么名字？”
秦举人一想，忘了问夷家医生了。又一想，这是在辛亥年间从夷人那里引来的，就说：“这叫‘辛夷’。”
8、辛夷具有发散风寒，宣通鼻窍的功能，用治外感风寒，头痛鼻塞，为鼻渊头痛要药。
