Combination of drugs help women in menopause

CHICAGO, Sep 14 (Reuters Health) - More physicians are turning to a combination of drugs and hormones to help women control the symptoms of menopause and prevent osteoporosis and other disorders, according to a gynecologist who spoke here during an Association of Reproductive Health Professionals conference.

"All of these different compounds, from estrogens to the addition of progesterone to soy and the statin drugs can have a dramatic effect," says Dr. Suzanne Trupin of the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign.

Estrogens and progestin, a synthetic form of progesterone, are included in traditional hormone replacement therapies. Soy contains estrogen-like compounds and statins are powerful cholesterol-lowering drugs.

For example, recent studies have shown that estrogen combined with drugs known as selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERM) or biphosphonates may combat bone loss after menopause. Biphoshonates are drugs such as alendronate (Fosamax), which strengthen bone.

SERMs, estrogen-like drugs that include raloxifene (Evista), may also decrease a woman's breast-cancer risk, Trupin says

New products on the market also will help patients to cope with the side effects of hormone-replacement therapy. For example, women who have trouble with spotting can take a medication that comes in a package similar to birth control pills. The drug helps keep the bleeding to a specific time of month.

For patients who have trouble tolerating progesterone, Trupin recommends using a hormone-delivering patch. She says the patch helps keep the progesterone dose to a minimum, which cuts down on side effects.

Although the recent avalanche of data on the risks and benefits of hormone-replacement therapy is confusing, Trupin says doctors can help patients determine if such treatments are right for them., 百拇医药(Melissa Knopper)
