&nbps;&nbps;&nbps;&nbps;NEW YORK, Sep 03 (Reuters Health) - Increasing rates of condom use during the early 1990s coincided with lower rates of HIV and syphilis infection among heterosexual adults in the US, according to a recent report.

&nbps;&nbps;&nbps;&nbps; However, it is not clear whether the trends persisted after 1996, the latest year for which data were available for the current study.

&nbps;&nbps;&nbps;&nbps;According to the report in the June issue of the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes, 61% of at-risk heterosexuals reported poor condom-use in 1996, compared with 81% in 1990.

&nbps;&nbps;&nbps;&nbps;A greater proportion of African American and Hispanic adults began to use condoms by the middle of the decade. For instance, nearly 90% of African American and 85% of Hispanic heterosexual respondents at risk for HIV reported poor condom-use in 1990. That number fell to 47% of African American and 55% of Hispanic at-risk respondents by 1996, the report indicates.

&nbps;&nbps;&nbps;&nbps; The increasing use of condoms among heterosexual adults coincided with needle exchange programs and a greater availability of free condoms, Dr. Joseph Catania, the study's lead author, explained in an interview with Reuters Health.

&nbps;&nbps;&nbps;&nbps; However, rates of condom use stopped increasing by 1996 and it is not known whether patterns have changed since that time.

&nbps;&nbps;&nbps;&nbps;"The people in the United States made substantial gains in behavioral changes. The scary part is that after 1996, we don't know what is going on in the country," Catania said.

&nbps;&nbps;&nbps;&nbps; The study examined risky sexual behaviors among US adults aged 18 to 49 years who reported having heterosexual sex in the past year. Risky behaviors included having more than two partners, having a sexual partner who is also having sex with others, or having sex with someone who has used intravenous drugs for at least 5 years.

&nbps;&nbps;&nbps;&nbps; The findings are based on data from three national surveys., 百拇医药
