Gb 病毒C也许抑制Hiv复制

On the other hand, Dr. Diekema pointed out, GB virus C may simply represent another confounding factor yet to be identified that is responsible for the improved survival.

In a separate study, Dr. Hans L. Tillmann, of Medizinische Hochschule in Hannover, Germany, and colleagues prospectively followed 197 HIV-infected patients, distinguishing patients who were actively infected with GB virus C from those previously infected as evidenced by the presence of antibody. It appeared that the impact of GB virus C on survival was greatest during active infection.

In commenting on this second study's findings, Dr. Diekema told Reuters Health that Dr. Tillmann's group "also found in co-infected patients an inverse relationship between GB virus C levels and HIV levels, which again suggests that there may be something about active replication of GB virus C that inhibits or blocks HIV replication."

"The clinical implications of these findings will be most evident once the mechanism by which GB virus C inhibits replication is determined," he added. "That may then lead to other therapeutic options."

Dr. W黱schmann speculated, "GB virus C may someday be used as a gene therapy vector, since no disease has been associated with its presence."

"Of course, the most glorious idea would be to vaccinate people with GB virus C and see if that would inhibit HIV replication," she added, with the caveat that much research remains to be conducted before such a trial could take place.

Dr. Valentina Stosor and Dr. Steven Wolinsky, of Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, write in an editorial, "Any suggestion that the intentional infection of persons with GB virus C be explored as a therapeutic approach for HIV infection is premature."

"GB virus C was only recently discovered, and the potential long-term consequences of persistent infection, especially in persons with weakened immune systems, will not be known for some time," they add., http://www.100md.com
