WASHINGTON, Oct 10 (Reuters Health) - The overall death rate from all causes in the US was down slightly in 2000, while Americans' average life expectancy ticked up to an all-time high, according to preliminary government figures released Wednesday.

American males born in 2000 now enjoy an average life expectancy of 74.1 years, up 0.2 years from 1999. Females have an average life expectancy of 79.5 years, up 0.1 years. Both figures tied or exceeded all-time life expectancy records.

A total of 2,404,598 deaths were reported to US health authorities in 2000, up from 2,392,399 in 1999. But the age-adjusted death rate, which accounts for the shifting demographics of an aging population, dropped 1.1% from 882 to 872 per 100,000 between 1999 and 2000.

Heart disease killed 709,894 persons in 2000 and remains the number one killer of Americans, though it caused 4% fewer deaths last year than the year before. Cancer, stroke and chronic lower respiratory system diseases like emphysema followed as the leading causes of death, according to the annual mortality report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Deaths from most leading causes were down last year, though rates of kidney disease, influenza and pneumonitis increased. Deaths attributed to Alzheimer's disease rose 8%.

Homicide for the first time appeared on the government's list of the 15 leading causes of death, claiming 16,137 lives. The overall homicide rate was down 6.5% between 1999 and 2000.

Meanwhile, nearly 42,000 people lost their lives in car accidents.

Women can still expect to live longer than men on average, though the gap in life expectancy continued a years-long narrowing trend last year. A 7-year difference between the sexes recorded in 1990 was down to 5.5 years last year.

However, large racial differences for life expectancy remain. White males born in 2000 have an expected average life span of 74.8 years, while black males could expect to live 68.3 years. Average life expectancy is 80 years for white women and 75 years for black women., 百拇医药
