LONDON (Reuters Health) - Medicdirect, a UK-based specialist health content portal, said on Monday that it had entered a partnership with Heathwatch, a Nestor Healthcare plc company, to provide a telemedicine monitoring service to UK patients and consumers accessing the Medicdirect Web site.

Under the partnership, which is for an initial period of 12 months, Medicdirect will provide Healthwatch with a micro-site on the Medicdirect portal, raising awareness of Healthwatch's service among patients and health professionals.

Financial details of the strategic alliance were not disclosed, but Peter Morgan, director of Medicdirect, told Reuters Health that payments would be based on a commission model.

Angela Single, managing director of Healthwatch, told Reuters Health that Healthwatch aimed to sign up 10,000 patients in the first 12 months of the partnership. Nestor Healthcare is already one of the UK's leading suppliers of home care.

She said that pricing would be based on an individual's needs, established in partnership with their GP, but range from ?0 to ?50 a month per user. Healthwatch anticipates that the service will be bought principally by National Health Service purchasers such as Primary Care Trusts, rather than individuals.

The Healthwatch service, launched by Nestor Healthcare in January 2001, uses remote monitoring devices installed in the user's home to enable patients to download cardiovascular and other data to the Healthwatch monitoring team. ECG readings for patients with heart conditions can also be transmitted by both landlines and mobile phone to the Healthwatch Clinical Response Centre which is permanently staffed by a team of trained cardiologists and nurses.

The Healthwatch medical staff also provides 24-hour advice to patients by telephone.

Under the partnership Healthwatch will also gain access to Medicdirect's research and development team at Warwick University, who are developing remote patient monitoring systems utilising artificial neural networks.

Medicdirect and Healthwatch also are actively discussing other joint initiatives in the UK. Morgan said that in January 2002 Medicdirect will launch new online services aimed at nurses and medical students., 百拇医药
