Risky Sex Linked to Partner‘s Alcohol Use

BOSTON (Reuters Health)-Teenaged African-American women were nearly twice as likely to have unprotected sex if the man they were with had been consuming alcohol, according to new study findings reported here at the American Public Health Association meeting.

``We know that when a partner drinks, it is a red flag for risky sexual behavior,‘‘ researcher Dr. Brenda Cobb of Emory University School of Nursing told Reuters Health in an interview.

The study focused on examining the relationship between condom use and unprotected sexual activity in young women reporting sex with a partner who had been drinking. To do so, the researchers evaluated the sexual behavior of 522 black Alabama women aged 14 to 18 who reported having sexual activity within the previous 6 months.

``We found that when the girl‘s partner was drinking alcohol they were less likely to use condoms, and it is not clear at this time why this would be so,‘‘ Cobb said.

The young women reported that they themselves had not consumed alcohol during the episodes of sexual activity under discussion.

``These young women should be aware that these circumstances may be a vulnerable time and they should consider disengaging from the activity,‘‘ Cobb told Reuters Health. She advised that ‘‘if the man is going to be drinking, don‘t go out with him, or negotiate sexual activities before going out.‘‘, http://www.100md.com
