一项新的研究表明：在1996年荷兰举行的足球赛中，荷兰因输给法国而丧失了入围欧洲锦标赛的资格。此时，荷兰因心脏病突发而死亡的人数比平时增加了50%。研究者们认为，死亡原因是由于死者心脏承受的压力在这一时期内急升超过极限所引起的。
荷兰一大学医学院的科学家们分析了1996年最关键的那场足球赛举行当天的死亡人数，并将之与比赛前后五天的死亡人数及1995年和1997年同一时期举行的足球赛中的死亡人数进行了比较。结果发现，在足球赛举行当天因心脏病发作和中风而引起的男性死亡人数平均是41例，而比赛前后五天的人数平均只有27.2例。研究结果发表在近期《英国医学杂志》上。
可见，一场重要的球赛可以引起因中风和心脏病死亡的人数上升。

Over-Excited Football Fans May Suffer Heart Attack
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) -- Football fans take heed: the upcoming Super Bowl game may be your last if the suspense and excitement of the big game is too much for your heart.
A new study has found that deaths from heart attacks jumped a whopping 50% during a Dutch football match in 1996 when the Netherlands lost to France and were shut out of the European championship. The researchers attribute the deaths to the increase in stress the men may have experienced.
Scientists at the University Medical Centre Utrecht in the Netherlands evaluated the number of deaths that occurred on the day of the fateful football match and compared it with the figures recorded 5 days before and after the match and in the same period in 1995 and 1997.
Their findings are published in the December 23/30 issue of the British Medical Journal.
``In men, (death from heart attack) or stroke was significantly increased on the day of the football match (41 cases) compared with the 5 days on either side (on average 27.2 cases),‘‘ according to researcher Daniel R. Witte, a doctoral student, and colleagues.
``Our findings show that an important football match can similarly provide sufficient triggers to cause a rise in (death from heart attack) and stroke,‘‘ the authors conclude.
