Study Confirms Pill Link to Blood Clot Risk

LONDON (Reuters) - American scientists on Friday confirmed concerns about the safety of combined oral contraceptives and their link to potentially fatal blood clots.

New research by doctors at Boston University School of Medicine in Massachusetts, published in the British Medical Journal, indicates that combined oral contraceptives containing desogestrel or gestodene and oestrogen can double the risk of blood clots compared to older birth control pills.

``The risk is twice as high,‘‘ Dr Hershel Jick told Reuters.

``There are some people who do better on these drugs and intravenous thromboembolism (blood clots) is not terrifically high, especially in young women,‘‘ he added in a telephone interview.

But he said the risk could be measurable in older women and those with an already increased risk of blood clots due to obesity, high blood pressure and smoking.

``They (the drugs) are on the market. They are approved. People should simply know that for this particular entity there is a higher risk,‘‘ he added.

The findings support earlier research about the potential danger of the combined pill, which is also known as the third-generation pill, that caused a scare in 1995 and resulted in a warning to doctors and pharmacists about the potential dangers.

Since the warning, the number of women taking the combined pill, which was introduced in 1990, have dropped by about 80%. More younger women than their older counteparts switched from the combined pill to the older pill, Jick said.

The researchers analysed British data on the number of blood clot cases in users of the combined pill and older contraceptives, before and after the pill scare, between January 1993 and December 1999.

``This paper not only indicates that the increased risk for third generation pills was there before the warning came out, it is there after the warning despite the fact that there is about an 80% reduction in the use of these drugs,‘‘ Jick said.

The researchers estimated that if women had not switched after the warning there would have been about 26% more cases of blood clots.

If more older women had switched, the decrease in blood clot cases would have been greater, they said.

``It is up to individual doctors and their patients to decide whether they want to use them (third-generation pills) or not. Like all drugs, some oral contraceptives are not well tolerated by some people,‘‘ Jick said., http://www.100md.com
