Women Look for Caring Doctors, Men Want Treatment

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Men and women tend to emphasize different characteristics in their relationships with their physicians, recent research shows.

``Women are more concerned with having a relationship with their doctor and the strength of that relationship, while men are just interested in getting treated,‘‘ Jerome D. Williams told Reuters Health.

``In popular lingo,‘‘ he added, ``our study tends to support the notion that ‘men are from Mars, and women are from Venus.‘‘‘ Williams, associate professor of marketing at Penn State University‘s Smeal College of Business Administration in University Park and colleagues conducted personal interviews with a cross-section of 144 adults aged 25 to 60 years old who were living in central Pennsylvania.

The respondents--55% of whom were female--answered a series of 35 questions pertaining to their experiences with their family physician, pediatrician, gynecologist, internist and other doctors.

Williams noted that more women than men felt that ‘‘relationship strength‘‘ was important. Women more strongly agreed with statements such as, ``I am happy to have him/her as the doctor,‘‘ and ``I would be happy to recommend the doctor without any reservations,‘‘ Williams said.

Women indicated more concern with receiving medical information whenever needed, maintaining a sense of control in the relationship, and having their doctor view them as an intellectual equal, Williams said.

While men also value these qualities, Williams said that “men don‘t care if they are talked down to or if their doctor is arrogant as long as they are treated.“ Williams told Reuters Health that ``the characteristics of the medical facilities of the physician, the location of supplementary facilities, and the location of supplementary physician services were definitely more important with men. These“structural bonds” were not as important for women, he added.

Williams noted that physicians could use this information to adapt their approach in treating and interacting with men and women patients differently. He presented the findings recently at the Society for Consumer Psychology meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona.,
