High Boron Intake May Cut Prostate Cancer Risk

WESTPORT, Conn. (Reuters Health) - New study findings suggest that men who consume high levels of boron--an element found in fruits and nuts--reduce their risk of prostate cancer. The results of the study were presented at the Experimental Biology 2001 meeting this week in Orlando.

Dr. Zuo-Fen Zhang from the University of California-Los Angeles School of Public Health compared the diets of 76 men diagnosed with prostate cancer to the diets of 7,751 healthy males. The healthy men were participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Study. All of the men completed 1-day dietary recall surveys.

Zhang said that when the men were divided into four groups, or quartiles, based on their consumption of boron, the men in the highest-consumption group had ``a 64% lower risk of developing prostate cancer.‘‘

In an interview with Reuters Health, Zhang said it appears that the more boron-rich foods and beverages consumed, the greater the risk reduction. Men in the second quartile had a 35% reduction in risk, while those in the third quartile reduced their risk by 24%.

He said the protective effect of boron was independent of other risk factors such as age, smoking, obesity and race. ‘‘When we looked at other cancers, there was no protection associated with boron,‘‘ Zhang added.

Charlene Rainey, president of Food Research Inc. of Costa Mesa, California, developed a boron nutrition database for the World Health Organization (news - web sites) in which she compared boron intake in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Egypt, Kenya and Mexico. Rainey said Zhang used this database to estimate boron intake based on the dietary recall surveys.

``It looks like 3.5 servings of boron-rich fruits and one serving of nuts a day would put men in the top quartile,‘‘ Rainey said in an interview with Reuters Health. She said that one serving of nuts is the equivalent of ``a handful of peanuts or almonds.‘‘ Other good boron sources include grapes, dried fruits, avocados, red wine or grape juice, Rainey said.

Zhang cautioned that the study results are based on a small number of prostate cancer cases, so the finding will have to be confirmed in a larger study.,
