Women May Be at Higher Risk of Gambling Addiction

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Women may succumb to a gambling addiction nearly three times faster than men, results of a small new study suggest.

Women gamblers also appear to be different than their male counterparts in other ways--they are more likely to gamble to escape from problems, to be single, and to begin gambling at a later age, according to a report presented at a recent meeting of the American Psychiatric Association (APA).

The findings mirror a phenomenon among alcoholics in which the addiction begins later but progresses more rapidly in women than in men. It has been suggested that factors such as lower body weight and less body water may contribute to the faster progression of alcoholic disease among women.

However, the current finding that an addiction to gambling can also occur more quickly in women indicates that something other than chemistry may be going on, Dr. Sheila Blume, chair of the APA‘s committee on treatment services for addicted patients, told Reuters Health.

``The roots of addiction become a more interesting and important question,‘‘ Blume noted.

The findings also underscore the need to develop treatment programs that target women with a gambling addiction--a psychiatric disorder that is associated with alcohol abuse, depression and thoughts of suicide. The addiction, known as pathological gambling, most commonly occurs in men between the ages of 21 and 55 years. About 1% to 4% of people in the general population are considered to be pathological gamblers, one third of whom are women.

``Pathological gambling is a growing problem all over America and abroad, as legalization of gambling spreads worldwide,‘‘ Blume said in a prepared statement. ``As with other addictive disorders, the disease manifests itself differently in women, and we need more information on these differences.‘‘

Indeed, the number of states in which it is legal to gamble rose to 48 in 1998 from 2 in 1978.

The researchers, led by Dr. Hermano Tavares of the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, compared characteristics of 25 women entering a treatment program for gambling addiction, with a group of men in the program., http://www.100md.com
