     SAN DIEGO, March 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Results of a

randomized, double-blind clinical trial released today at the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) annual meeting demonstrated that an antihistamine was effective in the treatment of perennial nonallergic (vasomotor) rhinitis.

Although hay fever -- seasonal allergic rhinitis -- is the condition most people are familiar with, there are different forms of rhinitis. Seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR) is caused by allergens such as pollens and mold spores. Perennial nonallergic (vasomotor) rhinitis (VMR) is a noninfectious chronic rhinitis that causes runny nose, sneezing, postnasal drip, and nasal congestion. Symptoms of this type of nonallergic rhinitis are very similar to those of allergic rhinitis and the common cold, which can make definitive diagnoses difficult. Symptoms typically are triggered or exacerbated by such things as perfumes, hairspray, paint fumes, spicy food, alcohol, and/or weather changes such as cold air and humidity.

The study compared azelastine hydrochloride -- marketed in the United States as ASTELIN(R) Nasal Spray -- to placebo in 203 patients with a diagnosis of vasomotor rhinitis (VMR). The results, presented as a poster at the AAAAI annual meeting, showed that ASTELIN Nasal Spray significantly reduced the total vasomotor rhinitis symptom scores (TVRSS) over the 21-day treatment period. No clinically important adverse events were reported during the trial. These results are consistent with those of another double-blind, randomized, multicenter study, which showed the efficacy of ASTELIN Nasal Spray in the treatment of VMR. The most commonly reported adverse events were bitter taste, headache, and dysesthesia.

"Because the symptoms of nonallergic rhinitis are similar to those of allergic rhinitis, it has been estimated that over 50% of patients actually don’t have pure allergic rhinitis. In fact, these patients have nonallergic rhinitis or a mixture of the two," according to Charles Banov, MD, an investigator for the clinical trial. Now, this second study offers additional evidence that ASTELIN Nasal Spray is an effective treatment option for nonallergic triggered nasal symptoms as well as previously demonstrated allergic rhinitis symptoms.

All of the patients who participated in the double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel-group trial had a diagnosis of VMR, had been symptomatic for at least one year, and -- prior to beginning treatment - had a negative skin test for common seasonal and perennial allergens and a nasal cytology exam negative for eosinophils.

The primary efficacy variable was the overall reduction from baseline in the total vasomotor rhinitis symptom score (TVRSS), comprising symptoms of rhinorrhea, sneezing, postnasal drip, and nasal congestion. Patients who met the baseline symptom severity criteria were randomized to treatment with either ASTELIN Nasal Spray or placebo.

Patients recorded the intensity of their VMR symptoms on diary cards. At the completion of the study period, treatment with ASTELIN Nasal Spray resulted in a statistically significant overall reduction from baseline in the TVRSS versus placebo as well as significant improvement versus placebo for each individual symptom of the TVRSS., 百拇医药
