Abstract
AIM: To investigate psychological aspects of patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and discuss better therapeutic methods.
METHODS: Eighty GERD outpatients were randomly selected. The GERD Questionnaire and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) test were used as investigative tools. Treatments used were proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), mucosal protective agents, a prokinetic agent and psychotherapy, as combination therapy. We then compared the scores of the patients before and after therapy.
RESULTS: GERD patients had higher scores on the GERD Questionnaire and MMPI before than after therapy (P < 0.01).
CONCLUSION: When treating GERD patients for digestive disease, psychotherapy is a necessary part of that treatment.
