     Functional magnetic resonance imaging of spinal cord injury.

    In this month's Spinal Cord, Stroman et al. present the development of a novel non-invasive method of mapping neuronal function, anywhere in the spinal cord, called functional magnetic resonance imaging. Previously, assessment of spinal cord condition following trauma relied solely on information revealed by external signs indicated by the patient, for example, whether they could move a certain muscle group or sense touch. The key to functional magnetic resonance imaging lies in its clinical application and its independence from the subject's perception. It reveals the full extent of cord injury, even if external signs don't reveal the change in the cord's condition.
