Hylan G-F 20 (Synvisc) and the corticosteroid combination betamethasone sodium phosphate/betamethasone acetate (Celestone Soluspan) appear to be similar in their ability to relieve pain and improve function in patients with knee osteoarthritis, according to the findings of a randomised trial.

Both corticosteroid and hyaluronic acid injections are widely used to palliate the symptoms of knee osteoarthritis, but few studies have compared the two treatment approaches.

"To our knowledge, the present report is the largest prospective, randomised trial involving a comparison of any hyaluronic acid product with any corticosteroid," note Seth S. Leopold, MD, with the Department of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, University of Washington Medical Center, Seattle, and colleagues.

The researchers randomised 100 patients with knee osteoarthritis to receive intra-articular injection of either Hylan G-F 20 (one course of three weekly injections) or the corticosteroid (one injection at baseline). Those receiving corticosteroid could request one more injection any time during the study. Patients were then followed for 6 months.

A blinded reviewer assessed the patients using the Western Ontario and McMaster University Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), the Knee Society system, and the visual analogue pain scale.

Compared to baseline scores, both groups demonstrated improvements in WOMAC scores at 6 months (P, 百拇医药
