Effects of Chinese traditional herbs on growth of periodontopathic bacteria

    ¡¾Abstract¡¿ AIM: To screen some Chinese traditional herbs against periodontopathic bacteria and test their minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC). METHODS: After being extracted with 650 mL¡¤L-1 ethanol, Chinese traditional herbs which possessed bacteriostatic potentials against periodontopathic bacteria were screened by means of disk agar diffusion method .Using broth dilution method, their MIC were determined. RESULTS: Crude extracts from Allium sativum.L, Flos caryophylli, Alliumcepa L, Cortex magnoliae officinalis, Quercus infectoria, Semen arecae and the mixture of Radix glycyrrhizae and Radix platycodi markedly inhibited both B. forsythus 43037 and P. gingivalis 33277. AgainstB. forsythus 43037, MIC was 1.25, 3.90, 7.80, 1.95, 31.25, 31.17, 7.80 g¡¤L-1 respectively; Against P. gingivalis 33277, MIC was 0.63, 3.90, 1.95, 1.95, 30.42, 15.60, 62.50 g¡¤L-1 respectively. CONCLUSION: Some Chinese traditional herbs have strong antimicrobial activity against periodontopathic bacteria. ......
