     With the guidance, organization and practice of Professor Li Qihong of department of orthopedics, Chongqing South-western Hospital, had achieved a breakthrough progress in the repair of large segmental bony defects (with a 20 % of the length of the original injured bony defect) using the technique of tissue engineering.

    A large proportion of orthopedic diseases with bony defects are caused by trauma, tumor growth or congenital disorders. The routine methods of repair consisted of autologous bone grafting, allografts and the vascular pedicled bone grafts, however, all these methods have their shortcomings. The practice of tissue engineering in the department of orthopedics of this hospital used the autologous bone marrow tissue; after in vitro culture with orientation of bone induction differentiation, the cultured material was implanted onto an absorbable highly porous lattice material to form the biologically activated "artificial bone tissue", which was then implanted in vivo of the animal body to repair large segmental bony defects. It was proved by histological section, microcirculation imaging and other methods of examination that the implanted "artificial bone tissue" was identical with the normal bone, with the formation of normal Haversian system of plenty microcirculation and recanalization of the bone marrow cavity., http://www.100md.com
