Recently, a special branch of cranio-vertebral surgery was established in the department of orthopedics, at the third hospital of Beijing University. Thus, a new subspeciality of orthopedic surgery had been added to the section of cranio-cervical spondylosis treatment.
As was recommended by Dr. Wang Chao, chief surgeon of the department of orthopedics that the domain of research and treatment being an important branch of spinal surgery, included the management of the disorders over the regions of the foramen magnum, the axis and the atlas etc. The anatomical region is close to the brain with complicated neuro-vascular structures and surgical procedures over this region are usually highly risky. In recent years, under the instructions of Professor Dang Gengting, more than 400 cases of atlas-axial diseases were treated with surgery.
