A project of study conducted by the People's Hospital of Wuhan University with the subject of "The detection of toxoplasma antibody in patients with mental illness" had recently obtained the financial support of an amount of 80 thousand yuan from an American foundation. The department of psychiatry of the hospital will investigate the relationship between the occurrence of mental illness with the habit of keeping pets.

As was revealed by Dr. Wang Kaohua, associate professor of the department that last year Drs. Li Quying and Wang Huiling of the department discovered a high titer of toxoplasma antibody in the serum of patients with mental disorders than that in the general poplulation, and the infestation of toxoplasma was closely related to growing pets. The result of this research had brought about attention of the American foundation.

This hospital has the plan to carry out a special investigation in a period of 2 years. Besides the study of toxoplasma antibody in 1200 cases of mental illness, a focal point survey will be carried out on the contacts of the mothers of the patients with mental illness with the pets during the pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, as well as the early post partum periods. The results of this study will be of significance no matter the outcome being positive or negative. A negative result will rule out the concern and a positive result will indicate a suggestion for the pregnant women not to get into contact with the pets during the pre-gestation period in order to reduce the incidence of mental illness., http://www.100md.com
