Chinese researchers discover a new system in brain
Not long ago, academician Li Chaoyi of the Institute of Neurological Science, Shanghai Life Science Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences and his student Yao Haishan jointly published a paper in Neuron. They discovered that in the primary visual cortex, a corpuscle functional construction related with the disposal of characteristic figures of large and complicated dimensions existed.
On the basis of their previous research, Li and Yao recorded hundreds of neurons with a special micro-electrode in the visual cortex of the cat, and described in detail the features of integration of these cells as well as their response to identical and different configurations. They also confirmed the existence of the related functional construction for processing complicated configurations of large dimension in the primary visual cortex. In contrast to the already existing constructions, this kind of the new cerebral functional construction is not columnar, instead they assume the configuration of huge number of micro-corpuscles with diameters of 300 μ m, inlaying in divergence among the already found vertical functional columnar structures. These are the functional construction of the first grade formed on the columnar background of simple functional character, for the processing of various complicated image information.
