New findings from studies on Parkinson's disease s

     Professor Wang Mingwei, chief of neurology, the fifth hospital affiliated to Hebei Medical University a returned post-doctorate fellow from the USA, in his research proved that the accumulation of dopamine in cytoplasm may lead to death of neurons; vesicular monoamine transport protein has the protective action for dopaminergic neurons.

    Dr. Wang Mingwei under the instructions of Professor Liu Yongjian, an American Chinese scholar of Pittsburgh University, Pennsylvania, revealed by using rat model, cell culture and protein electrophoresis that neurotoxic substance MPP plus vesicular monoamine transport body in the presynaptic membrane had a fairly strong affinity influencing the storage of dopamine in the synaptic vesicle, and resulting in the increase of dopamine in the cytoplasm of synapse body. Large amount of free radical and quinone substance were produced through auto-oxidation of dopamine, leading to degenerative changes of the neurons and even death. However, when dopamine, following combination with the vesicle monoamine transport protein, entered the acidic secretion vesicle, then the auto-oxidation of dopamine could be avoided. This process played an important role in the protective mechanism of neurons.

    The results of this study proved further that a positive correlation existed in between the amount of accumulation of dopamine in the cytoplasm and the mortality of neurons. The accumulation of dopamine in the cytoplasm may lead to death of the neurons and this might be a fact closely related to the episode of Parkinson's disease. Also, the function of vesicular monoamine transport protein was correlated with the accumulation of dopamine in the neurons, which played a protective role for dopamine neurons.
