Origin:
The dry fruiting body of Calvatia gigantra (Batsh. ex Pers.) Loly., or Calvatia lilacina (Mont. et Berk.) Lloyd, or Lasiosphaera fenzlii Renzlii Reich., of the Lycoperdaceae family.

Grown in Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Jilin, Liaoning, etc., of China, the fruit is harvested in autumn, and the scleroderm is removed from the fruiting body. The body is then diced or grinded into powder for use.
Properties:
Pungent in flavor, mild in nature, it is related to the lung channel.
Functions:
Clears away heat to expel toxic substances, soothes the throat and stops bleeding.

Applications:
1. For treating sore throat, coughing and aphonia (loss of voice) due to wind-heat and lung-fire:
For mild cases, it can be ground alone into powder to be held in the mouth or used in combination with such herbs as honeysuckle flower (Flos Lonicerae), weeping forsythia fruit (Fructus Forsythiae), skullcap root (Radix Scutellariae), etc.
For serious cases, it can be used together with peppermint, great burdock achene (Fructus Arctii), Zhejiang figwort root (Radix Scrophulariae), Chinese goldthread rhizome (Rhizoma Coptidis), isatis root (Radix Isatidis), etc., e.g., Puji Xiaodu Yin, in order to jointly achieve the effects of dispelling wind-heat and clearing away heat to remove toxic substances.

2. To treat hematemesis, epistaxis and traumatic hemorrhage:
This herb can arrest bleeding and treat hemorrhage, epistaxis, etc., due to blood heat as a result of accumulation of pathogenic fire in the lungs. This herb can be used alone or in combination with other herbs that remove heat from the blood to arrest bleeding.
For the treatment of any traumatic hemorrhage, puff-ball powder can be sprinkled over the wound in order to arrest bleeding.
