The Endocrine System in Sports and Exercise

The study of endocrine responses to exercise is a rapidly expanding field. In the past decade, the number of published research studies in this area has increased substantially. This rapid and extensive growth has made it a challenge for physicians and scientists to keep themselves up to date in this exciting area of research.

The Endocrine System in Sports and Exercise is the latest addition to the series entitled "the Encyclopaedia of Sports Medicine" from the International Olympic Committee Medical Commission. This volume in the series is a comprehensive reference source that will assist the professional who is trying to stay current in the area of exercise endocrinology.

The volume editors, William Kraemer and Alan Rogol, have enlisted a large number of international scholars to write about a wide and diverse range of topics in exercise endocrinology. The authors of the 38 chapters have done an exceptional job of covering their subjects in a relatively concise manner, and they have presented research of historical importance as well as current, cutting-edge findings. In their chapters, which contain a blend of basic and applied physiology, the authors discuss clinical relevance and offer critiques of some issues.

The high level of science writing in each chapter and the extensive reviews of literature are the key strengths of this book. Conversely, its limitations are relatively minor. For example, discussions of some subjects overlap among and within certain chapters, and some subjects are omitted. Also, there are varying stylistic approaches to topics among the chapters. However, the strengths of the book far exceed these weaknesses.

Any physician or scientist who wishes to stay current in the area of exercise endocrinology would certainly be well served by the addition of this book to his or her library. Nevertheless, the advanced level of discussion and the background knowledge required to comprehend fully the topics in The Endocrine System in Sports and Exercise would preclude it from use as a textbook for university students, unless they are in advanced levels of their training.
