Abstract Metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) is a novel family of G protein-coupled receptors. Each subtype shows different features in the aspects of molecular biology, neuropharmacology and distribution in the central nervous system. It can be divided into three groups according to the extent of sequence homology. Recent experimental research has demonstrated that mGluRs play an important role in the transmission of pain. This article will review the possible roles of mGluRs in the processing of nociceptive information. ......
