     Many people don't know that in Rome, you can drink the water bubbling up through most of the city's hundreds of fountains – unless there's a sign saying acqua non potabile of course, in which case keep your lips sealed.

    罗马城内有很多喷泉,但很少有人知道这些涌动的泉水大部分都可以直接饮用——除非旁边有告示“acqua non potabile”(意大利语,不能饮用的水),这种情况下,你就只能遗憾地“咬紧牙关”了。

    Sitting at the Trevi Fountain, I caught a hint of bleach in the smell of the water and thought twice about drinking it. Perhaps it had just been cleaned. I threw in a coin anyway and marveled at the massive size of this most famous of all wishing wells whose gurgles can be heard several streets away. The intricate Rococo-inspired fountain, presided over by Triton guiding two sea horses, is a perfect symbol of the Eternal City.
