目前临床上AFP多用于肝癌的筛查、诊断、预后及疗效观察。但鉴于其灵敏度、特异度较低，寻找灵敏度更高，具有早期诊断肝癌和更准确预测肝癌复发的指标迫在眉睫。AFP异质体有助于良性肝病与肿瘤、肝癌与其他肿瘤的鉴别，但仍有待大规模研究进一步明确其临床意义。
