     Results and Discussion

    The recently introduced UPLC is a combination of a 1.7μm reversed phase packing material and a chromatographic system, operating at pressures in 6000-15000 psi range. As a result, a 3-flod increase in efficiency and speed and a 1.7-fold increase in resolution and sensitivity. The effect of traditional Chinese medicine is a rather complicated group of chemical composition. As to most of Chinese patent medicines are compound recipe, the complexity is much more strengthened. UPLC/Q-TOF can meet the requirements of TCM analysis for its high performance, sensitivity and speed. Typical BPI plots of single and mixed decoction are given in Figure 1.

    As shown in Figure 1, some of the compounds changes in mixed decoction could be found directly in the chromatograms.

    PCA was used to in the subsequent data analysis in this study to gain a comprehensive view of the compounds. In order to get an insight into the compounds variations, we tried to find the related compounds based on PCA-Loadings. These compounds were related to the difference among the decoctions. The compounds variation significantly attributable in the clustering can be observed in the loadings plot (Figure 2), from which eighteen compounds recognized as significant.

    The peak area ratio of each compound to internal standard was calculated to describe the variations. The table 1 and 2 shows the main compound changes of Herba Asari and Veratrum Nigrum L, respectively. 

    There are eight compounds significant changed, the concentration of which were changed exceed 9%. One of the significant metabolites eluted at 7.64 min was detected at m/z
