【Interpretation】The eyes are blazing like torches， which means glaring with indignation. Later often used to
indicate far-sightedness and looking ahead with wisdom.
【释意】意思是目光发亮像火炬，形容愤怒地注视着。后来也形容眼光高明，看事明白透彻，见识远大。
During the Liu Song Dynasty (420-479)， there was a renowned general called Tan Daoji (？-436). He fought bravely in battles and was also adept in scheme and strategy. He followed the emperor to attack Former Qin (351-394) during the late years of Dong Jin (316-420)， and later he led the troops to crusade against the Northern Wei (386-557) in the year of 431. He achieved many triumphs and accumulated reputation and power.
南朝刘宋时期(420-479)，有一位名将叫檀道济，作战勇敢，又善谋略。东晋末年曾随宋武帝攻打后秦，元嘉八年(431)又领兵讨伐北魏，屡立奇功，威名极重。
Due to the fact that Tan Daoji made more contributions than the emperor， he was better received by the common people and gained more and more respect and admiration. What’s more， his several sons were all serving in the army and grasped much military power. The emperor unavoidably started to have wariness towards Tan Daoji.
由于檀道济功高盖主，受到社会的广泛爱戴，威信一天比一天高，几个儿子也都掌握了兵权，这让宋文帝产生了戒心。
In the year of 435， the emperor ordered Tan Daoji to the court and planned to kill him. When Tan Daoji saw the men sent by the emperor to arrest him， with his eyes blazing with anger just like two flaring torches， he cried， “What you are doing is just self-destruction!”
435年宋文帝召檀道济入朝，决意乘机将其除掉。当檀道济见到来逮捕他的官差时，不禁气得目光像火把一样明亮，大喊道：“你们这是自毁长城啊!”
Hearing of the death of Tan Daoji， the ruler of the Northern Wei got so cheered up that his troops offended Liu Song every year thereafter. It almost seemed that the troops were about to wipe out the Liu Song Dynasty. Not until the Northern Wei troops reached Guabu (now in the southeast of Liuhe in Nanjing) in the year of 450， did the emperor start to deeply regret.
