A member of the cardiac theatre team at a Welsh hospital is to leave after an investigation into working relationships in the cardiac unit.

The move at the unit at Swansea抯 Morriston Hospital, which was closed for a week earlier this year because of what was described as pressure of work (BMJ 2004;328:604 News Extra), comes after the findings of a mediation process.

Members of the team will also get help with 揵ehavioural development,?under a plan of action drawn up by Swansea NHS Trust.

揟he course of action centres on the need, identified in the findings, for a programme of support and development requiring changes in behaviour to be provided to individuals and the team and for one member to be removed from the team itself,?said the trust in a statement.

Earlier this year the 18 bed cardiac unit was closed for a week to allow members to recover after excessive workloads, and in a statement at the time the trust said, 揟he cardiac operating team has been working under considerable pressure involving staff working overtime and additional hours. In order to allow staff to recover from these pressures it has been decided to limit activity to emergencies only for the next week.?

It emerged later that an investigation was also being carried out after allegations of bullying and harassment had been made.

Specialist mediators were subsequently brought in to work with staff members to try to resolve the issues.

In a statement Swansea NHS Trust said: 揌aving considered the findings of a mediation process set up to help resolve complex issues among members of the cardiac theatre team, the trust has initiated a course of action to meet its prime concern of acting in the best interests of patients, while securing the long term wellbeing of the team.

揂s a result, one member has been withdrawn from the team. The details of the withdrawal are currently a matter of discussion between the trust, the individual, and the relevant professional representative.?

It added, 揟he trust wishes to repeat that clinical performance of the team is not an issue and continues to commend it for the standards of excellence it has consistently achieved. Similarly, the trust reassures patients awaiting cardiac surgery that steps are already being taken to ensure continuity of service and ongoing patient care, as has been the priority throughout the duration of these issues.?(Abergavenny Roger Dobson)
